Kaasav (English: Turtle) is a 2016 Indian Marathi-language film which was released on 6th October, 2017. It has been directed by filmmaker duo Sumitra Bhave-Sunil Sukthankar and produced by renowned film and theatre artist and psychiatrist Dr. Mohan Agashe in association with Bhave-Sukthankar’s production company „Vichitra Nirmiti“. The film won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film at the 64th National Film Awards. ‘Kaasav‘ is a story of Janaki, a divorcee trying to find meaning of life in a sea-turtle conservation project run by the conservationist Dattabhau in a coastal village. She accidentally meets a young suicidal man, Manav, who is lost, upset and lonely. Drawing the metaphor of a mother turtle which hatches her eggs and leaves before the young ones are born, Kaasav tells the viewer how patience and love can help a person with depression. The Movie presents depression as a medical condition that needs to be overcome by continuous engagement, monitoring and management.
Dr. Mohan Agashe
Padmashree Dr. Mohan Agashe (born 23 July 1947) is an Indian theatre and film actor. Internationally acclaimed actor and mental health expert Agashe has left an indelible mark across different spheres – whether through his compelling stage performances, remarkable screen presence, innovative theatre movements, incisive papers or rigorously executed health projects. Dr Mohan Agashe was a founding Director of Maharashtra Institute of Mental Health. He has also served as an Advisor to the Government of Maharashtra on Mental Health Education and Service. Agashe is presently the Principal Investigator for an Indo–US joint project on Cultural Disorders of Fatigue and Weaknesses.
